Sofia Kim

Teaching Artist


Korean-American violinist and Los Angeles native, Sofia Kim, is currently a doctoral candidate at Indiana University who enjoys a varied and diverse musical career. Her quartet formerly held the Kuttner residency at IU and was invited to Bonn, Germany for a week-long residency at the Beethovenhaus, performing at the Kammermusiksaal and working closely with scholars. After the Bonn residency, her quartet recorded several unpublished Beethoven fragments for NAXOS’s 250th Beethoven commemoration set. Sofia was the concerto competition winner at IU and has also been a top prize winner for the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition, the Los Angeles Rotary Competition, and the recipient of scholarships from the Dorothy Delay Starling Foundation and the Leni Fe Blande Foundation. Sofia has participated in numerous festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, the Banff Centre, the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, Colorado College Music Festival, Great Mountains Music Festival, and the Chautauqua Music Festival. She has collaborated with artists such as the Pacifica Quartet, Atar Arad, Emilio Colon, and Federico Cortese as well as performing with ensembles like the Indianapolis Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, and the Owensboro Symphony. Prior to attending IU, she graduated with high honors from Northwestern University where she studied with Almita Vamos. Other former teachers include Simin Ganatra and Henry Gronnier. Sofia is also an avid educator and has taught at Northwestern University’s String Academy and Indiana University’s String Academy. When she isn't playing the violin, Sofia enjoys writing, watching documentaries, and cooking for loved ones.
