Andreas Apostolou

Teaching Artist

Andreas Fevos Apostolou is a pianist-composer born into an artistic family in Athens, Greece. Theater and storytelling are a vital source of inspiration in his music and his performances. André Watts has described him as a pianist who “demonstrates intellectual rigor, poetic expression and powerful technique in his playing. His combination of musical imagination and emotional depth is rare and impressive.”

Andreas has a wide range of repertoire, specializing in baroque, classical, contemporary, and jazz. In his recital programs, he often contrasts works from across different historical eras, including underrepresented and women composers, as well as world premieres of new music. His original compositions have been described as an innovative combination of jazz, impressionism, and complex rhythmical patterns.

He has two Doctorate degrees, a PhD in Composition from UCLA and a PhD in Piano from University of Macedonia, two Master’s degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington (MM– Piano and Composition) and a Bachelor’s degree from Temple University (BM– Piano). He has won first prizes in international competitions, such as Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition for Young Arti, IBLA Grand Prize, Cum Laude Music Awards, and International Kozani Competition. He has studied with pianists such as André Watts, Robert Levin, Boris Berman, Dmitri Bashkirov, Vinia Tsopelas, and Alain Lefèvre.

As a concert pianist, he has toured in Europe, Asia, and America performing a wide range of repertoire, from Bach and Rachmaninoff to premières by Thomas Adès, John Luther Adams, and Apostolou’s own compositions. He has been featured in multiple concert series in Los Angeles, such as Jacaranda, Piano Spheres, Hear Now, Synchromy, and the Getty Villa. In New York, he has performed several times in the prestigious Bargemusic Masterwork Series.

As a composer, he has written for piano, orchestra, choir, theater, electronics, and dance. He has also scored over 20 short films and his soundtracks have been featured in the Getty Villa and the New York Times OP-docs. His piano works have been recorded by Naxos and he has published many albums of his piano music, electronic projects, and film scores. He is a board member of UMA (Unprecedented Music Association), an organization dedicated to premiering new orchestral music by LA-based composers.
