Rufus Bordal

Teaching Artist


Rufus Bordal, pianist/pedagogue, believes that music as an art form is unique in its emotive power and in how it can connect people. His journey as a musician shows his appetite for collaboration and sharing of the music which has impacted him so deeply. Rufus is currently a senior, trustee scholar, and Presser scholar, at USC’s Thornton School of Music studying Piano Performance with a minor in Jazz Studies. Rufus is experienced both as a solo performer and in collaboration with various groups. He has performed as concerto soloist with the USC Student Symphony, Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Pasadena Community Orchestra, the Southwestern Youth Music Festival Orchestra, the Bellflower Symphony Orchestra, the Santa Monica High School Symphony Orchestra, and twice with both the Palisades Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Doctors Symphony Orchestra. Rufus has received numerous 1st place awards in piano competitions, including the State Finals of the CAPMT Honors Competition, the Glendale Piano competition, and many others. He was a Semifinalist in the Cooper International Piano Competition and has received scholarships from the YoungMusicians Foundation and the Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Rufus has also performed twice in the past year with his piano quintet in USC’s strings chamber music festival and in the Paris Conservatory Masterclass Exchange.
