Charlie Tyler

Teaching Artist


Charles Tyler is a rising cellist who has performed live on radio stations in Cleveland and Chicago and in concert venues around the world. He was named the winner of the 2006 Cleveland Institute of Music’s Concerto Competition, was the top prizewinner of the 2012 Osaka International Music Competition and was recently named winner of the 2014 Atwater Kent Strings Competition. Tyler served as a Vorspieler member of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan for three seasons where he also performed in numerous chamber music and solo recital concerts. He has participated in the Tanglewood Music Center (where he was awarded the 2009 Karl Zeise Memorial Cello Award), Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival and was principal cellist of the National Repertory Orchestra. Tyler’s principal teachers include Richard Aaron, Tanya Carey, Joel Krosnick and Michel Strauss. He has received degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and The Juilliard School and participated in an exchange with the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Tyler is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music studying with Antonio Lysy.
